GLAUCOMA RISK FACTORS YOU SHOULD NEVER IGNORE
Glaucoma is that quiet guest who enters your house, rearranges your furniture, and leaves without saying hello, until one day you notice things are missing. The scary part? By then, it may be too late to get them back.
First on the list of its risk factors is AGE. If
you’re above 40, congratulations, wisdom has arrived, but so has a higher risk
of glaucoma. And no, good eyesight today does not mean good eyesight forever.
Next is FAMILY HISTORY. If glaucoma runs in your
family, it may also be jogging toward you. This is not the kind of inheritance
anyone wants, so early eye checks are non-negotiable.
HIGH EYE PRESSURE is another major risk factor. You
won’t feel it. It won’t hurt. There will be no alarm sound. That’s why glaucoma
is called the silent thief of sight. Waiting for pain is like waiting for rain
before fixing a leaking roof.
People with systemic issues like diabetes, high blood
pressure, or heart disease also need to pay attention. These conditions
don’t like working alone; they often come with friends.
Frequent or long-term USE OF STEROID MEDICATIONS,
especially eye drops, is another red flag. Steroids are helpful, yes, but used
wrongly, they can quietly damage your vision. So, please use medications only
as prescribed by your Eye Doctor and quit self-medication.
And let’s not forget EYE INJURIES. That “small punch”, that “small slap” from years ago may still be
keeping records.
Here’s the truth: glaucoma doesn’t announce itself. It
sneaks, steals, and escapes silently. But the good news? Early detection saves
sight.
So don’t wait until your vision starts playing hide and
seek. Get your eyes checked regularly. Because when it comes to glaucoma, what
you don’t know can hurt you.
